  • Working on a remix comp. Any thoughts on this one?

    • Better than the original. The mix is pretty cool, just take the kick 0.5dB. down and its good. If you want to keep the punch, then remove some of the kick from 350-550.

And yes I complain about kick all the time, even my own. But if you take your track on speakers, and begin turning the volume down, it ends up with a very dominant kick in the mix.

      • Cheers Piv, I took out a bunch already, but will notch out a little more in the low miss. Considering it’s the one sound that plays for at least 80 to 90% of your track the kick is pretty important 😉

      • One trick I’ve been using lately to control the low end frequencies is using soothe as a dynamic eq. Dialing in frequencies from about 130 and below, and then setting attack time so it really only affects the end of the kick and releases quickly. If you take about a lot fo that sub info it really cleans up the low end. 100% of my earlier tracks…Read More

        • I use Fabfilter MB limiter for that trick . I really dont like these new plugins. They got so many phase issues because it basically a 48k band dynamic EQ.

Im not saying there is no need for kick. But this one is headphone mixed, and you can hear it on speakers.

          • I hear you on phase issues. Especially in the lows. I’ve been using shaperbox to look at the wave of my kick in real time while processing, to see what the impact of any editing is. That’s helped a lot to confirm the change’s and avoid mis aligning the phase. I’ll post some screenshots when I’m home over the weekend.

    • mix sounds good, as for the kick, I’ll take Piv’s word on that! Love the movement on the main bass/synth. Getting the low end to sound right has always been my biggest problem…

      • Cheers Paul. Get the low end right, and the rest falls into place. It’s a journey for sure.

        • Not a fan of the vocal, but then I guess it wouldn’t be much of a remix if you took it out 🤣 Rest sounds great to me – really like the bass and shufflly hats (???) from the get go. And, yeah could maybe take a little off the kick without losing much.

          • Made some updates to the mix. Dropped kick by a full DB, better EQ on claps, some additional compression on the mixdown, and some serious reduction on the background foley that was just creating a noisy floor. Aced the car test, I’m thinking this one is done.…Read More

  • Tim mentioned putting two up for the new release, how’s this proper house number sounding?

    • Not home before tomorrow, but will give it a listen then. and yes compilations are back on track

    • Hi Scott Thanks for Posting up really liking this one nice flow, groove and feel, sounding good my end mix wise really liking those vocals and the percs give a nice latino feel on this good job m8

    • There is nothing wrong with the mix, it sounds great. even your saturation works out of the box on this one. DONE!

    • good latin feel drums , solid mix, vocals good. Has a great bouncy feel to it.

      • Sounds good to me, love the synth that comes in to accompany the bassline around 1’15, and vocals sound great too. Nice one.

  • Started working on this one over the weekend, recycling a dub sample from an old track that was consigned to the scrap heap. Bit tougher than some recent ones from me, but still at a respectable bpm. Kinda pleased with how its coming along, but let me know if anything stands…Read More

    • Only problem in that mix is the bass is too loud in the low mids. And there is no need for that loud of a top on it, I know its a huge part of the track. But they can come down a little since the rest of the mix is rather crowded in the low mids, but in a really good way. Your low mids/mids are really great mixed. So the bass feels a bit…Read More

      • Thanks Piv. Will take a look at that – I’d added some saturation to the bass to bring it to the fore, so probably overdid it in that area. Still want to do a fresh mix pass and not 100% sold on the clap / snare layer, but hopefully its heading in the right direction.

    • Nice little vocal effect around :35
Agree the bass might be overwhelming the track a little but over all this is sounding great.
This progresses nicely over the track, I really like it.
The vocal in the drop with the acid 303 is slick
I’d say this only needs minor tweaks, I know you mentioned the snare/clap. I think this suits the track myself…Read More

    • Agree with Piv on the low mids. I’ve been saturating bass for a whole to fill out that range, and found that using the same synth duplicated one octave higher does a better job. Vocal sounds a bit like Horace Andy, nice. I think a bit of call/response with the synths could help here to provide a bit more breathing room in the mix.

      • Cheers fellas, have made some updates here. Scooped out some of the bass around 200 – 200hz, changed the clap and made some arrangement and mix tweaks. Reckon its sounding quite a bit cleaner now, so pretty happy with it. Thinking it could be the opening track on my long talked about album which I’m aiming for early next year – reckon it sets the…Read More

        • A/B-ing this and the one above the mix is way more open and clean. Nicely done. Love that vocal! Maybe some harshness or clipping at the filter sweep at 1:38. Other than that, lovely.

  • Potential submission for the WTMO compilation. Need any edits?

    • There are some problems with the kick, but I think it’s down to lower et 0.5 to 1dB.
Really nice track, the vibe is insane and dark.

      • Cheers Piv, lower kick db by 1 or so? That’s my new focus, getting the bass and kick transients to sit right, rather than overwhelm. Been mixing on headphones as my wife is 34 weeks pregnant, and yeah, it’s rarely a good time for monitors 😉

    • Great track Scott! I’m feeling it right from the get go.

I dig the vocal, it’s familiar but I can’t place it.

The synth at 1:10 is great. Fantastic ear candy throughout and the stuttery synth after the first drop that keeps building is an awesome element.

Definitely a dark, kinda warehousey vibe to this.

  • Posted this in the wrong place. So posting again here. Any feedback will be most gratefully received. 🙂

Hi Guys! A new demo I’ve been working on. Progressive techno, 124bpm. C minor.
I’d love to hear any comments. 🙂

    • Everything is there. What I’m missing is some more punch and warmth to your subs. The mix feels a bit thin, and could use some more up in your face. Your 303 classic in the background can easily get a few more dB’s

But all in all its some more mixing needed to get those warm basstones floating 🙂

      • Thanks for the feedback @staticcorn. Oddly enough, this was one of the few times I got to mix in a treated room, and on some Genelec 1032s! I think you’re right though. I wonder if saturation might do the trick… I’m going to rework the track, incorporating a few things I’ve learned since then.

        • Well the 1032 do have a little much bass and are quite punchy, and many times treated rooms are more in the 200 and above, it’s hard to get control below, another thing is that the desk also makes a bump at around 120-160hz,

Anyway looking forward to hear it with the new rework 🙂

    • I agree with Piv, all the elements are there it just needs to be pushed a bit more now.

I really like the sounds you’re using, especially that stuttery synth/pluck thing.

The way the pad shifts around 1:35 is super cool.

around 2:10 is ace, bringing in that kind of darker sounding synth.

I think with a few tweaks this could be amazing. Great work!
